How Shall I Live, Knowing I Will Die?
I'm afraid of death. I am frightened that all the things that I am doing will come to an end one day. It is downhearted to think that man's existence has its limit. It is not a cycle that one can repeat after reaching his final fate of destiny. Throughout the process of life, no one is capable of foreseeing things in advance. With this truth, is our life worth living for despite the reality of its impermanence? Do we have the courage to accept the fact of life uncertainty?
There are two types of people—one who is unaware of mortality and one who fully recognizes death. The former represents the people who are often too busy fulfilling their dreams. It is we who are yearning to live in success, abundance, and power because it is our ideal concept of living. With our extreme desire to exist conveniently, we sometimes forget that time flies so fast. We are somehow busy that we do not contemplate that maybe, this is our last day. We are drowned to the sea of our works, without thinking that every breath we take brings us closer to our impending death. The second one constitutes those individuals who always take things for granted, reasoning out that humans will all die. We sometimes hold back because we believe that our achievements are nothing but just self-titles. We are unappreciative of things as we grip the fact that those are temporary.
That duality resides among us. Therefore, we must live a purpose-driven life and, at the same time, celebrating every moment we have. We should not only focus on our dreams but also acknowledge the experience outside of ourselves. Be thankful for food, for laughter, for friends, for family, for sleep, and for waking up every morning. Earth is so admirable for humanity to appreciate. Be brave to breathe and experience this gift despite its transience. Knowing life is uncertain, we should live fully with love and gratitude. Impart a legacy!
